Hair Loss

Hair loss affects millions of people. The causes vary widely, including genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalance, stress, nutrient deficiencies, inflammatory scalp conditions, and medical treatments.

Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern hair loss, is the most common cause. It results from sensitivity of hair follicles to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone, leading to miniaturized hair follicles and progressive thinning of the hair. Other causes include medical conditions such as thyroid disease, autoimmune disorders like alopecia areata, nutritional deficiencies such as iron or vitamin D deficiency, and certain medications. Hair grows in cycles, with a growth phase (anagen), a transitional phase (catagen), and a resting phase (telogen). When the cycle is disrupted, or follicles become miniaturized, hair becomes finer and shedding increases. Because causes vary, selecting the right treatment depends on accurate diagnosis by a dermatologist.

Treatment options for hair loss depend on the underlying cause, which will be determined during your consultation. Inflammatory conditions may require topical solutions or shampoos. Both female and male pattern hair loss typically benefit from minoxidil solution, and oral medications like finasteride or spironolactone may be recommended in certain cases.

Richey Dermatology offers Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), a non-surgical hair restoration treatment for both men and women. It is also utilized for skin rejuvenation.

PRP uses the body’s own nutrients to stimulate hair growth. The first step is a blood draw. The tube containing a small amount of your blood is then placed in a machine called a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins the tube at a high speed to separate the platelet rich plasma from the remainder of the blood. The platelet rich plasma is then directly injected into areas of hair loss or thinning. There will be some mild discomfort during the injections. After the treatment, you can return to your normal activities. You may notice bruising, mild swelling or a sensation of fullness.

Typically, Dr. Richey recommends a series of 3 monthly treatments, followed by maintenance treatments every 6-12 months. She may also recommend combining PRP with other therapies.
