Skin Tightening
Non-surgical skin tightening procedures have become increasingly popular among patients who want firmer, smoother skin without surgery or prolonged downtime. At her practice, Dr. Patricia Richey, a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon who is also Harvard-trained in cosmetic dermatology, evaluates each patient carefully to determine whether a non-invasive approach can realistically improve skin laxity and overall texture and meet her patient’s goals.
Skin tightening refers to treatments designed to improve mild to moderate skin laxity by stimulating the body’s natural collagen and elastin production. Collagen is the structural protein that gives skin strength and firmness, while elastin allows skin to stretch and return to its original shape. Starting in our twenty’s, collagen production begins to decline and existing collagen fibers begin to break down. Over years, the result is looser skin, fine lines, and a less defined jawline, neck, and facial contours.
Non-surgical skin tightening procedures do not remove excess skin. Instead, they deliver controlled energy into the deeper layers of the skin to trigger collagen remodeling. Over time, this process leads to gradual firming and subtle lifting. These treatments are best suited for individuals with early or moderate laxity who are not ready for surgical intervention.
Richey Dermatology is proud to offer Sofwave™ an FDA-cleared treatment that uses powerful high-intensity ultrasound energy to tighten skin and reduce lines and wrinkles through collagen stimulation. The treatment takes about 30-45 minutes, and you will receive a numbing cream prior to treatment. About 12 weeks after treatment, patients notice tighter skin and a lifted appearance, with decreased lines and wrinkles. There is no downtime after the procedure. Maintenance treatments may be recommended once or twice a year, depending on the patient’s aging process.
A thorough evaluation is essential before proceeding with any skin tightening procedure. During consultation, Dr. Richey assesses the patient’s skin quality, degree of laxity, sun damage, and overall facial structure. She also reviews medical history, current medications, and any prior cosmetic treatments.
Not every patient is a candidate for non-surgical tightening. Individuals with significant skin redundancy or advanced sagging may not achieve meaningful improvement without surgery. It is important to set realistic expectations. Non-surgical treatments can produce visible firming and refinement, but they do not replicate the dramatic results of a surgical facelift.
The treatment takes about 30-45 minutes, and you will receive a numbing cream prior to treatment. During treatment, patients may feel warmth or brief pulses of heat as energy is delivered into the deeper layers. The sensation is usually tolerable, though some areas may be more sensitive than others. The goal is to reach temperatures that stimulate collagen without damaging surrounding tissue.
One of the primary advantages of non-surgical skin tightening is minimal downtime. Most patients return to normal activities the same day. Mild redness, swelling, or warmth in the treated area may occur and typically resolves within hours to a few days.
Non-surgical skin tightening can be an effective option for patients seeking gradual, natural-looking improvement. Results vary depending on age, baseline skin condition, and lifestyle factors such as sun exposure and smoking. These procedures slow and partially reverse visible signs of aging, but they do not stop the aging process.
For many patients, combining tightening treatments with other modalities such as neuromodulators, fillers, or resurfacing procedures produces more comprehensive results. A strategic, individualized approach often yields the most balanced and refined outcome.
By carefully evaluating candidacy and selecting appropriate technology, Dr. Patricia Richey provides patients with evidence-based, non-surgical options that enhance skin firmness while preserving a natural appearance.
