Kybella

Kybella is a non-surgical injectable treatment designed to reduce fullness beneath the chin, commonly referred to as a double chin. For many individuals, this area remains resistant to diet and exercise, even in those who are otherwise fit and healthy. Dr. Patricia Richey, a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon who is also Harvard fellowship-trained in laser and cosmetic dermatology, offers Kybella as a targeted solution for patients who want a more defined jawline without surgery. Treatment is performed in the office and does not require incisions or general anesthesia.

Kybella is the brand name for a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that specifically targets fat. Kybella is not a skin tightening treatment. In cases of skin laxity, alternative or additional treatments may be discussed.

Kybella is most appropriate for patients who prefer a non-surgical approach and want to avoid liposuction or neck surgery. Individuals with certain medical conditions or a history of difficulty swallowing require careful evaluation before proceeding. A thorough consultation is essential.

Kybella injections are performed in the office and typically take about 15 to 30 minutes. The number of injections depends on the size of the area and the amount of fat present. The goal is to evenly distribute the medication throughout the fat layer to achieve smooth, natural-looking contouring. During the procedure, patients may feel a brief burning or stinging sensation as the medication begins to work. This sensation usually subsides within minutes.

Most patients require a series of treatments to achieve their desired outcome. Treatments are spaced at least one month apart. The number of sessions varies, but many individuals need between two and four treatments. Some require up to six sessions depending on the amount of fat present.

Results develop gradually. Because the body must clear away destroyed fat cells, visible improvement appears over several weeks. Each treatment builds on the last, creating progressive contouring of the chin and jawline.

Swelling is the most common and expected part of recovery. In fact, swelling is a sign that the medication is working and triggering the breakdown of fat cells. Swelling can be significant in the first few days and may last one to two weeks. Some patients describe a feeling of firmness or heaviness under the chin during this period.

Bruising, tenderness, redness, and mild numbness may also occur. These effects are temporary and resolve on their own. Most patients return to work and routine activities within a few days, although social downtime may be necessary due to visible swelling.

Less common side effects include temporary difficulty swallowing or nerve irritation that can cause an uneven smile. These risks are minimized when the injections are performed by an experienced, board-certified dermatologist who understands facial anatomy. Careful technique and precise placement are critical to safety and results.
