Excessive Sweating
Excessive sweating, medically known as hyperhidrosis, is a condition in which the body produces more sweat than is necessary to regulate temperature. Sweating is a normal and essential function that helps cool the body during heat, exercise, or stress. In hyperhidrosis, however, sweating occurs beyond what the body needs and often without an obvious trigger. The condition can interfere with daily activities, professional responsibilities, and social interactions. Many individuals struggle for years before seeking medical care, assuming that nothing can be done. In reality, effective evaluation and treatment options are available.
Hyperhidrosis is classified into two main types: primary and secondary. Primary hyperhidrosis usually begins in childhood or adolescence and most often affects specific areas such as the underarms, palms, soles of the feet, or face. It tends to occur symmetrically, meaning both hands or both feet are involved. This type is not caused by an underlying disease and is thought to result from overactive sweat glands triggered by the nervous system. A family history is common, suggesting a genetic component.
Secondary hyperhidrosis develops as a result of another medical condition or medication. It may cause more generalized sweating and can begin later in life. Identifying whether sweating is primary or secondary is an essential first step, because the treatment approach differs depending on the cause.
Diagnosis begins with a detailed history and physical examination. Dr. Richey carefully evaluates when sweating started, which areas are affected, whether symptoms occur during sleep, and whether there are associated medical concerns. A review of medications and overall health is essential to rule out secondary causes. Treatment depends on severity and location. Most in-office treatments are minimally invasive. Dr. Richey customizes the treatment approach based on individual lifestyle, medical history, and treatment goals. The objective is not only to reduce sweating but also to restore comfort and confidence.
