Dr. Patricia Richey

Board-certified dermatologist and double fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon and cosmetic expert in Chevy Chase

Patricia Richey, MD, FAAD, FACMS, is a double fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon and laser dermatologist. She is board-certified in both dermatology and Mohs micrographic surgery.

A Chevy Chase native, Dr. Richey is thrilled to be opening her own practice in her hometown. She is the only physician in the DMV who is both a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon and a Harvard-trained laser and cosmetic dermatologist. Her laser and cosmetic fellowship was completed under Dr. Rox Anderson, the inventor of pulsed dye laser, Fraxel laser, laser hair removal, and laser tattoo removal.

Education and training

Dr. Richey graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University before attending Georgetown University School of Medicine, where she was accepted through the competitive Early Assurance Program. She went on to match into dermatology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, a top dermatology program and one of the most competitive specialties in medicine.

During residency, Dr. Richey was unanimously selected by the dermatology faculty as sole chief resident. She was later accepted into the Mohs micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology fellowship at the University of Iowa, a highly selective fellowship with a less than 50% match rate among dermatology residents.

Advanced fellowship training

Following her Mohs surgery fellowship, Dr. Richey was selected by Dr. Rox Anderson and Dr. Mathew Avram for the prestigious clinical and research fellowship in laser and dermatologic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, the Wellman Center for Photomedicine, and Harvard Medical School.

During her laser fellowship, Dr. Anderson recruited Dr. Richey to remain on staff at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine and Harvard Medical School to continue her clinical research on minimally invasive treatments for Neurofibromatosis Type 1, a condition that can cause disfiguring tumor development beginning in puberty.

Awards and recognition

In 2023, Dr. Richey was named the winner of the Dr. Richard E. Fitzpatrick Clinical Research and Innovations Award by the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. That same year, she was selected as one of eight “Mohs Surgeons Leading the Future” by the American College of Mohs Surgery.

Dr. Richey was also one of four Mohs surgeons chosen by the American College of Mohs Surgery in 2023 to author the Mohs Surgery Tissue Processing Guidebook, which details tissue processing errors encountered by Mohs surgeons and histotechnicians and how to address them.

She was selected to give the Alfred Hollander, MD, Lecture in Dermatology at the New England Dermatological Society Annual Meeting in December 2024. In June 2025, Boston University dermatology residents named her Teacher of the Year.
